NSAIDS

What are they?

NSAIDs are anti-inflammatory medicines that decrease certain chemicals that cause inflammation.

They help reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints.

How do they work?

Enzymes are proteins that mainly help speed up chemical reactions in the body.

NSAIDs block the body's ability to make certain chemicals that cause inflammation by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX). Normally, this enzyme is used by the body to make inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins. By blocking the enzyme, NSAIDs decrease the amount of prostaglandins in the body to decrease inflammation.

Common NSAIDs

  • Naproxen (Naprosyn)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil)
  • Indomethacin (Indocid)
  • Diclofenac sodium (Voltaren)
  • Piroxicam (Feldene)
  • Celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • Meloxicam (Mobicox)
  • Ketorolac (Toradol)
